Bricklaying is a core function within the construction sector, particularly the house building sector. Bricklayers lay bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects.

The Government has a target to build significantly more new homes over the coming years. This has increased significantly the residential development in both the Wakefield District and the wider region. This has increased the demand for bricklayers.

Successful completion of this course leads to qualified bricklayer status.

This apprenticeship standard will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be a qualified bricklayer.
Whilst there is no mandatory on-programme assessment in relation to the Bricklayer standard, this programme will follow the recommended training specification of the City and Guilds Level 2 qualifications for both knowledge and competence.

This will enable you to develop knowledge and skills that will include:

• Health and safety
• Customer Service
• Masonry structures
• Radial and battered brickwork
• Feature and reinforced brickwork
• Building technology

Whilst developing behaviours suitable required by a bricklayer.

Where a level 2 qualification in English and Maths is not held on entry, you will be required to:

• Study and achieve level 1 English and level 1 Maths (this could be GCSE, Functional Skills or other).
• Study and take the assessment for level 2 English and level 2 Maths assessments (this could be GCSE, Functional Skills or other).

This standard is of 24 to 30 months duration.

Attendance at college is expected to be 18 to 24 months on a day release basis. The typical college day is be 45% classroom based and 55% workshop based.

Where required English and Maths study will be through additional attendance at the college.

Throughout the training period both college lecturers/assessors and your employer representative will complete progress reviews. When both your employer and the college consider you competent in all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will be entered in for the End Point Assessment.

This is a three-part independent assessment:

1. Knowledge assessment, a multiple-choice exam
2. Skills assessment, 3 simulated practical tasks
3. Oral assessment, 15 questions

Successful assessments are graded pass/merit/distinction

Attendance is one day per week, anticipated to be Friday. The standard college day will run from 09:00 to 20:00.

It is expected that attendance at college is maintained at a level of 95% or above.

There are no costs to students aged between 16 and 18.
