Course Overview Designed for students whose first language is not English, this course will give students an opportunity to improve all aspects of their English including speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students will also have the opportunity to take mathematics, personal and social development and ICT skills alongside their English classes as well as developing employability skills.
What you will Study The ESOL 16-18 study programme course covers all aspects of the English Language, and you will study a range of interesting and engaging topics such as holidays and travel, education, hobbies and free time. You will also develop your skills in English grammar, vocabulary building, conversation, pronunciation, reading and writing through detailed practice.
How you will Learn

Through a variety of classroom-based and practical activities including the following:

Class discussions
Interviews
Role-play
Pair work
Speaking tasks

How you will be Assessed

By a variety of methods including:

Classroom assessment
Practice exams
Regular homework
One to one tutorials
External tests

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry qualifications, but you should show you are prepared to give your full commitment to the course.

You will have an initial ESOL assessment before you join the course to make sure you are put in the appropriate group at a level suitable for you.

Attendance Expectations

A typical week consists of 12 hours English Language teaching, 2 hours of ICT and 2 hours of maths.

All of the classes will take place in college.

You will also be expected to complete 2 hours of independent study per week to support your progress.

Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn
by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

After finishing this course, students have the opportunity to progress to other courses that we offer within the College.

Ahad joined the College when he was 16 and spoke very little English and was low in confidence. He has improved greatly, passing a number of English exams. His confidence has soared and now he can talk to everybody.

Ralfs, aged 18 from Latvia

Ralfs joined the College when he was 16 and successfully completed a Level 1 ESOL qualification, a Level 2 Mathematics qualification and a Level 1 ICT qualification during his year on the course.

Beata aged 18, from Poland

Beata joined the College a year ago after arriving from Poland and spending some time at high school. She has built on her existing English skills and achieved a lot in her first year at the College, including a full Entry Level 2 qualification in ESOL. She is currently working towards a Level 1 qualification. Her writing skills have progressed greatly.
