Course Overview

Learning and Skills Teachers (LSTs) are responsible for planning and delivering learning that is current, relevant, challenging, and that inspires learners to engage and achieve their full potential. Apprentices will develop their skills and knowledge by learning the theory and the craft of teaching in a real-world environment.

This programme is for those new to teaching or wishing to upskill to a full teaching position within the Further Education and Skills Sector (16+).

Students will develop the following professional behaviours, skills and knowledge:

  • Ethical and legal standards within professional boundaries
  • Diversity, equality of opportunity & inclusion
  • Resilience, focus and adaptability when dealing with challenge and change
  • A passion for learning and high expectations of all learners
  • Exemplary communication skills with learners and all professional relationships
  • Effective use of current, digital and mobile technologies in support of teaching & learning

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. If you are aged 16 or above, are driven to succeed in a particular industry and are willing to commit yourself to training and study, then an Apprenticeship could be the right career move for you.

What You Will Study

The apprentice will learn, work, earn and achieve a qualification all at the same time.

To achieve the apprenticeship they will complete the following:

  • An industry designed and recognised apprenticeship
  • End Point Assessment (Professional Discussion and Two Teaching Observations)

The apprentice will work towards the following Functional Skills:

  • Mathematics up to Level 2
  • English up to Level 2

Learners who have already achieved GCSEs (A-C or equivalent) in Maths and English may be exempt from Functional Skills.

The apprenticeship is mainly work based, however the apprentice will be required to attend Selby College one evening per week to complete the required equivalent award of the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

How You Will Be Assessed Professional Discussion and Two Teaching Observations
Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements for an apprenticeship (unless an employer stipulates any themselves) however all potential apprentices will undertake a basic Maths and English assessment prior to enrolment.

Further Study Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the Learning and Skills Teacher could progress into curriculum/training leadership roles such as a Course Leader or Assistant Area Head. Learners may also progress onto further studies at university or onto a Certificate/Professional Certificate /Postgraduate Certificate (PGCE) in Lifelong Learning at Selby College.
