Course Overview

This Apprenticeship aims to prepare you with the skills, knowledge and behaviour needed to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector with a Design and Build role. You will be able to reflect on your performance to make improvements, and you will develop the skills needed to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to an ever-changing world.

This course can only be completed if you have employment in the industry and your employer is supporting you.

You will attend college on a day-release basis to complete a HNC in Modern Methods of Construction for England, alongside work-based learning components.

What You Will Study

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a Level 4 qualification made up of 120 credits.

Activity to support guided learning will be 90% classroom-based learning supervised by a tutor with 10% live e- learning supervised by a tutor.

The content of the programme is specified by Pearson with four units delivered in each of the years 1 and 2:

  • Construction Environment/Digital Applications for Construction Information
  • Construction Technology/ Principles of Off site Construction
  • Principles of Alternative Energy/Construction Design Project
  • Building Information Modelling/ Tender and Procurement

You will be expected to complete independent study to complete the programme. This is essential to ensure success on your course.

On-site assessor visits will take place throughout the apprenticeship programme to support meeting on apprenticeship standard knowledge, skills & behaviours.

How You Will Be Assessed

HNC Assessment takes place throughout the academic year to assess how you have applied the knowledge. It is anticipated that the breakdown for assessment will be: 10% class exercise; 20% presentation; 70% assignment work.

Apprenticeship Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours's will be assessed using:

  • Internally Set Assessments
  • Written Reports
  • Evidence of Learning in a Portfolio
  • Professional Discussions
  • Direct Observations
  • Q&A Sessions

All apprentices are required to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification.

Entry Requirements

For students who have recently been in education, the entry requirements are to include one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction and The Built Environment
  • A Level Grade E or above in more than one relevant subject

This needs to be supported by GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or equivalent) in English and Maths.

Other entry qualifications that will be considered are:

  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience
  • An international equivalent of the above
Attendance Expectations One day per week at Castleford College alongside on-site assessor contact approximately every 8 weeks. Please note all apprenticeships require Off the Job elements of approximately (6 hours per week based on 30 contracted hours per week).
