Course Overview This course allows students who currently hold a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) to complete further study to top up their qualification and obtain a full honours degree. The course combines learning experiences which develop a range of sector-relevant academic, vocational, technical and employability skills. the programme has excellent links with the local health authority, schools, and fitness industry employers, which ensure that you'll develop skills that are really valued by employers.
What you will Study We aim to enhance the quality of learning and your student experience and we believe that the attainment of multi-disciplinary skills is crucial to your success and will allow you to progress on to your applied specialism. Modules are of an applied nature throughout to facilitate your development into your preferred career choices. Modules such as, Applied Physiology, Lifestyle Management and Cardiac Rehabilitation will allow you to apply your knowledge and understanding to situations you are likely to encounter in the Physical Activity with Exercise Prescription field enhancing their employability. Your studies will culminate in the production of your dissertation or major independent study project.
How you will Learn The teaching and learning environment offers students the opportunity to develop a multi-disciplinary understanding of physical activity with exercise prescription. Assessments are designed to reflect industry requirements including “live” projects, case studies and field based work. The industry linked assessments provide students with valuable experiences to enhance their employment opportunities with high levels of students’ achievement and student progression into physical activity industry employment or onto post graduate programmes. Active learning is a key component of the programme providing a more realistic (context-based) study and problem solving in learning; confronting students with “real” problems which may be encountered in the work place.
Course Structure Within this programme, the curriculum is structured to provide academic knowledge and understanding integrated with, and supported by the development of, vocational skills and competencies, taking account of the need for appropriate academic rigour. The course is split into two semesters. In semester one you will study: Applied Exercise Physiology, Research Process and Planning. In semester two you will study: Lifestyle Management and Exercise Referral for Special Populations, Cardiac Rehabilitation and Dissertation.
How you will be Assessed The focus is on vocationally relevant assessments that provide differing assessment practices to meet the needs of different learning styles. A range of formative methods will be used throughout the programme and the variety of methods will stimulate students and help to develop specific skills relevant to industry; methods such as mock exams, formal debates, peer reviews, written tasks, quizzes and practical delivery. The assessment types aim to reflect ‘real world’ practice, where possible, a variety of assessment approaches are adopted, e.g. reports, essays, written examinations, practical assessments, presentations, posters; all of these are designed to cultivate a critical appreciation of the relationship between theory and practice in the area of Physical Activity with Exercise Prescription.
Entry Requirements Foundation Degree in Physical Activity with Exercise Prescription or a similar subject. Applicants with other Level 5 qualifications in appropriate subjects may also be considered. Direct entry to level 6 is possible for holders of a Dip HE, HND or equivalent level 5 qualification in an appropriate subject. There is an expectation of a 55% and above average score at level 5.
Attendance Expectations It is expected that any Higher Education (HE) student who enrols at Wakefield College does so with the intention of achieving a qualification. It is expected that students will aim for 100% attendance. This includes regular attendance at all course lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars, field trips, dissertation tutorials, laboratory sessions, and assessment opportunities.
Attendance - Please note Prior to commencing the programme all new students will undertake a 2 days ‘induction’ period which includes a full induction to the campus, its facilities and the programme.

Fees relating to academic year 18/19 will be confirmed around the end of April.

Further Study Graduates from the programme will have the opportunity to further their academic studies through a Post Graduate degree in a related topic at another institution. For those with a particular interest in teaching Wakefield College also offer a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Career Opportunities Students will have the skills to develop and implement physical activity interventions for individuals. Students could also consider a career in health-related fitness or teaching in mainstream education or health promotion fields.
