Course Overview

This qualification will develop your technical knowledge of the built environment sector.

It aims to give you an insight into how the buildings, infrastructure and landscape around us come into existence, and would like to find out more, this qualification covers all aspects of the creation of our towns and cities, and is fundamental to creating a sustainable future.

Technical posts in the Construction sector include those of Architects; Building Surveyors; Quantity Surveyors and Construction Managers.

As a technician within the Construction sector you can expect to earn up to £15,000 per annum, and with fully qualified professional status have the potential to earn up to £70,000, depending on the field.

Please Note: Work placement opportunities will be available at all levels.

What you will Study

You will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Compulsory topics for all pathways include:
• Construction Principles
• Construction Design
• Health and Safety in Construction
• Construction Technology
• Graphical Detailing (Including an introduction to CAD and BIM)
• Building Regulations
• Building Surveying

For the ‘Construction management’ pathway you will also take the following units in year 2:
• Management in Construction
• Quality Control management in Construction
• Project in Construction

How you will Learn

The aim of the course is not only to extend the theoretical knowledge of the industry but also to introduce skills required for the workplace. Delivery is carried out traditionally in the classroom through formal and informal sessions, including practical and resource-based learning activities with tutorial back up. Working with employers, we aim to study local projects which help to extend the learning environment beyond the College premises.

Through this study programme you will develop the ability to learn independently; the ability to research actively and methodically; develop and strengthen communication skills through group activity and presentation work

How you will be Assessed

Two of the units are externally assessed.

Construction principles is assessed through a 90 minute written examination, taken in January or May/June.
Construction Design is assessed through a piece of  externally set and marked coursework carried out in a supervised environment.

The remaining units are assessed through assignment work completed throughout the academic year that will identify how you applied the knowledge gained. Some of these assignments will be based around practical work carried out during the unit session.

All assignment work has to be completed within the timescales provided and is restricted to a single submission. In extreme cases an extension of time can be granted by the internal verifier and one resubmission granted.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs 9-4, including English and maths and science

Where you do not meet the entry requirements but have achieved GCSE grades 9-3 in English and Maths there is the opportunity to study the Extended Certificate in the first year to support the retake of these GCSEs.

Attendance Expectations Full-time, can be up to five days per week (Monday to Friday), you may also have some self-study time.

Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course

Further Study Typically, learners progress to a second year to complete an Extended Diploma. However some learners do progress to employment and return to study the Higher National Certificate on day release.
Career Opportunities

This course will enable you to progress your career into areas such as architecture, quantity surveying, building surveying, civil engineering and building services engineering. These jobs combine both office and on –site based activities.

Progression to direct employment in the sector could be as:
• trainee site engineer
• trainee construction project technician
• trainee technician estimator/buyer/planner
• trainee construction design technician.
