Course Overview

This T level study programme for Construction is the introduction of career ready education for the Construction curriculum.

This T level will combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to make sure a real experience of the workplace is achieved.

The T Level qualification, equivalent to 3 A Levels, has been designed by a panel of employers from the Construction and Civil Engineering sector and the industry professional bodies including, Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, Chartered Institution of Civil Engineers, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and education specialists.

The purpose of the Level 3 Technical qualification is to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills to progress into skilled employment technical or professional roles within the sector or to higher-level training.

With this in mind, the T level encompasses

• The technical knowledge and practical skills required for the professional and technical roles
• Maths, English and Digital skills required for the professional and technical roles
• An industry placement of at least 45 days.

80% of your time will be spent in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement with an employer to give you the skills and knowledge companies look for.

What you will Study


The core content will focus learning around the following areas

• Health & Safety
• Design Principles and Procedures
• Science with Building Technology
• Management
• Measurement
• Commercial Business and Law.

Students then select their desired occupational specialism and the further study is carried out to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for this area.

These include:

• Surveying & Design for Construction and the Built Environment
• Civil Engineering
• Building Services Design.

During your placement you will gain experience of working for an established and successful company. You will work with a supportive, motivated and focused team, gaining real experience of working on client projects. You will put your classroom learning into practice, developing the technical skills that will help you become more employable.

How you will Learn You spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement with an employer to give you the skills and knowledge companies look for.

How you will be Assessed

You will be assessed via a variety of methods such as external exams, controlled assessments, an employer-led set project, and practical assignments.

This will generate an overall grade of pass, merit, distinction, or distinction*. You will be awarded a nationally recognised certificate which will show a breakdown of what you have achieved.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs grades 9 – 5 including English, maths and science.
Attendance Expectations Attendance is expected to be over four days per week at College. For some there may also be an expectation to attend a work placement one day per week, although block week placements are being planned.
Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

Additional Course Costs A residential trip has been planned for the end of the first year of study. The estimated cost of this is £250.00.
Further Study

Upon successful completion progression can be to an apprenticeship. This can be sideways to Level 3 Construction Apprenticeships to develop and gain certification of their occupational competence, or they could progress to higher level Apprenticeships such as Level 4: Construction Site Engineering Technician, Construction Quantity Surveying Technician, Construction Design and Build Technician, Building Services Engineering Technician, Construction Site Supervisor.
Or Level 6: Building Control Surveyor, Building Services Design Engineer, Building Services Engineering Site Management, Chartered Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Civil Engineering Site Management, Construction Quantity Surveyor, Construction Site Manager, Design and Construction Management, Architectural Assistant.

For those who prefer a more academic route, they could progress to relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes or construction degree programmes such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Surveying, Building Services Engineering, Construction Design and Architecture.

This Technical Qualification and the pathways offered at the College is intended for students who want to progress to a career in the construction sector, with a focus on Surveying and Design, Civil Engineering, or Building Services Design.
