Programme Design and Overview

This course is designed to equip working engineers with the necessary academic skills to progress in their careers.

It is a broad-based program of study but addresses fundamental areas which span many disciplines in modern engineering including aerospace, energy, industrial manufacturing, design, mechatronics and food processing.

The course comprises 4 units of study per year. Learners are provided with module materials, lectures, tutorials, computer workshops, laboratory tests and research exercises. The course draws students from many international companies and a wide geographical catchment.

Delivery Methods

The course is delivered through a mixture of classroom-based work and practical work using modern equipment. Students will attend lectures on a day-release basis which will include tutorials, computer workshops, research periods etc. Students are expected to sustain 10 hours per week of self-directed study.

In Year 2 students will also undertake an individual project and group tasks which will enhance development of knowledge and skills.

Nature of Assessments on the Programme Students will be assessed through a mixture of phase tests, theoretical and practical assignments, and a work-related project.
Entry Requirements

Either/or Level 3 qualification in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent.

Those with previous experience or learning that is relevant may be eligible via our RPL process for accreditation towards this course.

Attendance Expectations Usually 1 day per week (Thursday) starting at 09:00 to 18:00
Fee Information

These fees relate to 2022/23

Tuition Fee: £3,475.00 per year.

Home and EU students on their first higher education course who are studying at least 25% of a full-time equivalent course can apply for a non-means tested tuition fee loan from Student Finance England. For more information, please visit:

Additional Course Costs

The following costs should be used as a guide only.

Printing and photocopying costs: There is no charge for course hand-outs, handbooks etc. Students will receive a printing credit of £10 per annum from the University Centre, after which students will have to pay for extra credits.

Library overdue charges: Overdue charges apply to all library loans to encourage you to return any resources you borrow on time. Overdue charges are 5p per day per book.

There is no charge for e-books rentals.

Graduation Ceremony: When you graduate, we will invite you to your graduation ceremony. It is free for you to attend, however, to take part you will need to pay to hire an academic robe to wear during the ceremony. Details can be found here:

Further Study The Higher National Certificate course introduces learners to higher education and enables progression Higher National Diploma Level 5 and degree courses, such as BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering.

Pre-enrolment Preparation Learners are advised to review mathematics and mechanics studied at BTEC Level 3 prior to starting this HNC course.
Group Size Average group size is approximately 18 learners per group.
