Programme Design and Overview This programme is for people who support teachers in schools, and who work largely unsupervised, contributing toward assessments and familiar with planning. It will enable you to obtain a nationally recognised qualification while you work.
What you will Study

You will need to achieve 11 mandatory units: -

• Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
• Schools as organisations
• Support learning activities
• Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
• Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
• Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
• Support assessment for learning
• Engage in personal development in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
• Support children and young people's health and safety
• Understand child and young person development
• Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

How you will Learn Portfolio sessions will include theory research, practical tasks, group involvement, work based projects, resource learning and workshops. Your assessor will plan, and assess your practical work in the workplace.
Nature of Assessments on the Programme You will be allocated a workplace assessor who will develop an individual learning plan and will guide you to develop a portfolio of evidence to meet the learning outcomes.
Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to have sufficient language and literacy skills to be able to achieve the qualification. Since this qualification is assessed in the workplace, you need a job or voluntary position within a school setting that offers you suitable experience and the chance to demonstrate the necessary skills.
Attendance Expectations You will need to attend portfolio guidance sessions at regular intervals with your assessor which will help you to put together your course evidence. Your course should be completed within 12months.
Fee Information

These fees relate to 2022/23

Course costs for students aged 19 or over - £2,670.00

*There is an additional charge of £186 per month for every month over the 12 month enrolment period*

If you are 19 or over and do not already have a level 3 qualification or higher, you may be able to access a free level 3 qualification with us.

If you earn below the National Living Wage (less than £19,305 annually) or are unemployed, from April you may also be able to access these qualifications for free.

If you are not eligible for a free L3 course, an Advanced Learner Loan may be available to cover your course fees

Further Study The level 3 Diploma Specialist Support is appropriate if you are supporting individuals with learning or disability difficulties.
Career Opportunities This qualification will help you to develop your skills as a teaching assistant and recognise the skills you have already acquired in the workplace. It may assist you to progress to senior assistant roles, or eventually to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. Although formal qualifications are not generally mandatory for teaching assistants, there is increasing competition for these posts and possession of City & Guilds certificates or diplomas will give you an advantage when applying for jobs.
