Course Overview

This course is suitable for adults (19+) who want to develop their skills, techniques and overall understanding of Composing for Film & TV, Sound Design for Media, Studio Production, Digital Sampling, Sequencing and Live sound engineering. This course will give you all the experience needed to prepare you for a career within the Music Industry. This is one year course also offers excellent progression opportunities at both local and national Higher Education institutions and internally to the College’s own degree programmes.

The ideal candidate will possess a passion for Music Technology that has been acquired through their personal interests or commercial activities in this field.

What you will Study

The topics covered on the course will develop and enhance your practical music technology/production skills but also your theoretical knowledge. Modules include:

• Studio Recording
• Sequencing for Media Composition
• Music and Sound for Visual Media
• Listening Skills
• Live Sound Techniques
• Digital Sampling
• Studio Mixing
• Practical Harmony and Composition

The course comprises of a combination of graded and ungraded units, including Study Skills that will support your application to HE courses (Online UCAS application, portfolio building, interview preparation etc.)

How you will Learn You will be taught through a number of teaching and learning styles that will allow you to gain full access to our specialist facilities within the Music Department such as our Recording Studios, Post Production Suites, Live Sound Venue and Music Technology suites that run dedicated Audio Software such as Logic Pro X, Cubase Pro and Native Instruments Komplete.

How you will be Assessed The course involves a variety of assessment techniques including practical work, written assignments and oral presentations.
Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualifications required for this course although you need to have achieved or be working towards Level 2 or GCSE grade C or above in English and/or Maths, which you can take alongside the Access course if necessary.

A passion and interest in Music Technology related subject is highly desirable, along with examples of work to be presented during the interview process.


Attendance Expectations

The course requires you to attend College for at least three days a week, with essential independent study expected. The approx. duration each week will be 12 hours.

Fee Information

These fees relate to 2022/23

Course costs for students aged 19 or over - £4,835.00

If you are aged between 19 to 23 and you have not already achieved a full level 3 (or above) qualification, then your course may be free.

If you are aged over 19 and have achieved a full level 3 qualification or are aged over 24 you are probably eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan from the government to cover your tuition fees. The good news is that you will not have to repay this loan if you complete an Access course and then an HE/ degree course in any subject specialism.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students.

Further Study This course will allow you to progress on to degree courses in specific areas of Music Technology at both local and national universities and other Higher Education institutions. Popular HE destinations for our current students include: Wakefield College, Leeds Beckett, Huddersfield, Hull College, BIMM.
Career Opportunities The course provides opportunities to look at how you can gain careers in the following areas: Live Sound Engineering, Studio Production, Events Management, Radio Production, Film and TV composition.
