Course Overview

This course is suitable for adults (19+) who want to develop their skills, techniques and overall understanding of construction skills, practical and classroom based activities. This course will give you all the experience needed to prepare you for a career within construction.

This one-year course also offers excellent progression opportunities at both local and national Higher Education institutions and internally to the College’s own HE programmes. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for engineering and construction that has been acquired through their personal interests or industrial experience in this field.

What you will Study

The topics covered on the course will develop and enhance your practical skills as well as your theoretical knowledge.

The course graded units including that provide essential skills for aspiring construction students:

  • Engineering/Construction Drawing / CAD
  • Further Mathematics for Engineering/Construction
  • Mechanical Principles
  • Materials Science
  • Research Project
  • Construction Technology & Design
  • Building & Civil Engineering Technology

The course also comprises ungraded units, including Study Skills that will support your application to HE courses (Online UCAS application, portfolio building, interview preparation etc.)  There is also an ungraded introductory Mathematics unit for Construction.

How you will Learn You will be taught through a number of teaching and learning styles that will allow you to gain full access to our specialist facilities at our Castleford campus and Wakefield College’s new Advanced Skills and Innovations Centre (ASIC) building at the Wakefield City campus.
How you will be Assessed The course involves a variety of assessment techniques including practical work using our purpose built premises and written assignments.
Entry Requirements GCSEs 4 or C or above is preferred in English and Mathematics but candidates without these qualifications may be accepted on the basis of an assessment in these skills at the interview stage.
Attendance Expectations The course requires you to attend college for at least three days a week, with essential independent study expected. The approx. duration each week will be 12 hours. Timetables are yet to be confirmed.
Fee Information

These fees relate to 2022/23

Course costs for students aged 19 or over - £3,928.00

If you are aged between 19 to 23 and you have not already achieved a full level 3 (or above) qualification, then your course may be free.

If you are aged over 19 and have achieved a full level 3 qualification or are aged over 24 you are probably eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan from the government to cover your tuition fees. The good news is that you will not have to repay this loan if you complete an Access course and then an HE/ degree course in any subject specialism.

Further Study

This course will allow you to progress on to degree courses in specific areas of construction at both local and national universities and other Higher Education institutions. 

Students who complete and successfully achieve the Access qualification will be offered places on the Wakefield College Level 4 HNC construction courses.  There are also opportunities to undertake Foundation degrees and full Bachelors at local universities.

Career Opportunities

There are a number of career opportunities within a wide range of construction occupations.

The three main sectors within the Construction industry are currently experiencing a ‘skills shortage’ in the higher skilled employment areas, with a sector demand for quantity surveyors; estimators; building service designers; civil engineers; site managers being some of the roles available.
