Programme Design and Overview
This programme is for people who support teachers in schools and who work largely under supervision. It will enable you to obtain a nationally recognised qualification while you work.
What you will Study
You will need to achieve nine mandatory plus two optional units. The
mandatory units are:-

Activities
How you will Learn
Your assessor will plan and assess your practical work in the workplace. You will also be required to attend regular portfolio guidance sessions with your assessor.
Nature of Assessments on the Programme
You will work with your assessor who will guide you to complete projects, case studies and assignments as well as collating evidence from other sources.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, since this qualification is assessed in the workplace, you need a paid or voluntary position within a school setting that offers you suitable experience and the chance to demonstrate the necessary skills.
Attendance Expectations
You will need to attend portfolio guidance sessions at regular intervals during your course with your assessor; these will help you to put together your course evidence. Funded places will be required to attend support sessions via Microsoft teams for 1:1 training with their assessor.

Further Study
Your next step is the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning
in Schools which is appropriate if you have responsibility for a variety of
activities.
The level 3 Diploma Specialist Support is appropriate if you are supporting
individuals with learning or disability difficulties.
Career Opportunities
This qualification will help you to develop your skills as a teaching assistant and recognise the skills you have already acquired in the workplace. It may assist you to progress to senior assistant roles, or eventually to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. Although formal qualifications are not generally mandatory for teaching assistants, there is increasing competition for these posts and possession of City & Guilds certificates or diplomas will give you an advantage when applying for jobs.
