Course Overview This qualification has been designed for those members of the school workforce who directly support the teaching and learning of pupils and who have a specialism in supporting, for instance, bilingual children or children with special educational needs.
What you will Study

You will need to achieve 11 mandatory units plus optional units.

The mandatory units are:-

Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
Schools as organisations
Support learning activities
Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
Support assessment for learning
Engage in personal development in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
Support children and young people's health and safety
Understand child and young person development
Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people

How you will Learn Portfolio sessions will include theory research, practical tasks, work based projects, resource learning. Your assessor will plan, and assess your practical work in the workplace.
How you will be Assessed You will be allocated an assessor who will guide you to complete a portfolio of evidence building evidence from knowledge and understanding to practical tasks.
Entry Requirements There are no formal entry requirements, but you will need to have sufficient language and literacy skills to be able to achieve the qualification. Since this qualification is assessed in the workplace, you need to be employed or have voluntary position within a school setting that offers you suitable experience and the chance to demonstrate the necessary skills.
Attendance Expectations You will work closely with your assessor. Having regular tutorials 121 with your assessor are essential to aid success.Your course should be completed within 12 - 18 months

Course costs for students aged 19 or over - POA

If you are aged between 19 to 23 and you have not already achieved a full level 3 (or above) qualification, then your course may be free.

If you are aged over 19 and have achieved a full level 3 qualification or are aged over 24 you are probably eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan from the government to cover your tuition fees.

Further Study You may be able to progress to a Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning Support.
Career Opportunities This qualification will help you to develop your skills as a teaching assistant and recognise the skills you have already acquired in the workplace. It may assist you to progress to senior assistant roles, or eventually to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant status. Although formal qualifications are not generally mandatory for teaching assistants, there is increasing competition for these posts and possession of City & Guilds certificates or diplomas will give you an advantage when applying for jobs.
