Programme Design and Overview

Have you always wanted to work with young children but thought it was too late for a career change?

This 19+ course gives you the skills and knowledge required to be a fully qualified early years educator and enables you to work with children 0-7 years in a range of settings.

The qualification sets the standards that all early years practitioners must meet, to ensure you are skilled to support young children’s learning and development and able to meet each child’s individual need

What you will Study

• Child development
• Early years curriculum (EYFS)
• Meeting children’s care needs
• Observation, Assessment and Planning for children’s learning
• Safeguarding children
• Children’s additional needs

How you will Learn You will be in college for 6 hours each week. You will need a placement with children 0-5 years which will give you the practical skills required to complete the course successfully.
How you will be Assessed

Assessment will be through portfolio building, written assignments, projects, presentations and reflection (currently no exams).

Practical skills will be assessed through direct observation, feedback from setting staff and personal reflection.

You will also complete a mandatory longitudinal study of a child in your care.

Entry Requirements

GCSE maths and English at grade C or above or working towards this level (this may be studied alongside the course)

A passion for working with young children to support them to develop and learn.

As this course requires contact with young children all learners will be required to have an enhanced DBS; this also includes compliance with ‘Disqualification by Association’ requirements.

Attendance Expectations 6 hours per week in college and one day in an early years placement or appropriate work place setting.

These fees relate to 2022/23

Course costs for students aged 19 or over - TBC

If you are aged between 19 to 23 and you have not already achieved a full level 3 (or above) qualification, then your course may be free.

If you are aged over 19 and have achieved a full level 3 qualification or are aged over 24 you are probably eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan from the government to cover your tuition fees.

Additional Course Costs You are eligible to cover costs for a DBS check of £50 to enable you to attend a placement.

Further Study

Learners who successfully complete this course may progress onto Higher Education courses at Wakefield College; including Early Years Foundation Degree (level 4 and 5).

Other areas for further study may include; early years teaching qualification, children and young families degree, social studies degree, play work degree (depending on experience and meeting university entry requirements).
