This advanced apprenticeship standard will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be a qualified advanced site carpenter, whilst developing behaviours required by this role.

There is a mandatory competence qualification to be achieved this is the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations – Site Carpentry.

Whilst there is no mandatory on-programme assessment for knowledge in relation to the Site Carpentry standard, this programme will follow the recommended training specification of the City and Guilds Level 3 qualification. This will enable you to develop knowledge and skills that will include.

• Health and safety
• Technical principles of advanced site carpentry
• How to carry out advanced calculations and work out cutting angles for complex carpentry work
• How to form complex joints
• Utilise a range of advanced trade skills which allow them to carry out complex carpentry work
• Install complex and non-standard doors and window frames
• Install accessible service encasements, bespoke wall/ floor units and fitments
• Erect inclined roofs with gables, roof verges and eaves,

In addition, apprentices must complete, or have previously completed, recognised English and Mathematics Level 2 qualifications (this could be GCSE, Functional Skills or other).

This standard is of 12 to 18 months duration.

Attendance at college is expected to be 12 months on a day release basis. The typical college day is be 45% classroom based and 55% workshop based.

Where required English and Maths study will be through additional attendance at the college. This is expected to be block release.

Throughout the training period college lecturers/assessors will assess progress in relation to the knowledge element of the standard; a college assessor will work with you in the development and assessment of the NVQ Diploma.

In addition, throughout the training period both college lecturers/assessors and your employer representative will complete progress reviews.

When both your employer and the college consider you competent in all the knowledge, skills and behaviours you will be entered in for the End Point Assessment.

Successful assessments are graded pass/merit/distinction.
