Course Overview

The sport sector is a fast-growing industry. It is currently worth £39 billion to the economy and continues to grow annually (‘Sporting Future: A New Strategy for an Active Nation DCMS, 2015’). Coaching is an area that continues to expand, with up to 3.1 million adults in England estimated to having coached sport or physical activity in the previous 12 months, providing 7.6 million coach-led participation experiences per week (Coaching in an Active Nation The Coaching Plan for England, YouGov Study, 2016). This suite of qualifications includes embedded industry accreditation, allowing learners to progress directly to work in the sector or to further study.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is intended for post-16 learners who want to progress directly to employment, including self-employment, in sports coaching and development roles. It is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners have the added advantage of using the qualification to help them obtain part-time employment while studying.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is intended for post-16 learners wanting to progress directly to employment, including self-employment, in sports coaching and development roles. What you will Study

Learners taking this qualification will study six mandatory units:

• Unit B: Health, Wellbeing and Sport
• Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills
• Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills
• Unit 1: Sport Development
• Unit 2: Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

National Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma

Learners taking this qualification will study seven mandatory units:
• Unit A: Careers in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry
• Unit B: Health, Wellbeing and Sport
• Unit C1: Developing Coaching Skills
• Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills
• Unit E: Research Project in Sport (Pearson-set)
• Unit 1: Sport Development
• Unit 2: Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills, supported by underpinning knowledge, and gives learners the opportunity to relate the skills and knowledge to the sports coaching industry. This prepares learners to work independently as coaches and gives them the skills and expertise to coach at all levels of sports ability for both children and adults. Unit D1: Applied Coaching Skills unit provides additional underpinning knowledge, skills and experience for working as an independent coach. The research project unit supports learners in carrying out independent research in a related topic to build research skills and experience that supports progression to higher education. Learners will select five optional units. These units allow learners to increase their breadth of understanding of working in the coaching industry, for example how to deal with sports injuries, sport psychology to support the mental health and sporting progress of participants, fitness testing to assess the fitness of participants, and technical and tactical skills to develop participants’ key techniques and skills. Learners can develop their business skills by selecting the marketing communications, sport and leisure facility operations and/or corporate social responsibility units.

The teaching team have many years industry experience in both the fitness and sports industries and this is shared in the teaching and learning environment with students.

How you will Learn

On a sports programme, you will learn through classroom teaching and activities incorporating IT access as well as practical application in a sports coaching environment.

The college has a designated strength and conditioning suite, fitness studio, sports fields, sports hall and massage suite. The learning is supplemented with engagement with industry specialists as you will complete a work placement as part of the Level 3 Sport programme.

How you will be Assessed All study programme assessments are continuous throughout the academic year. Theory subjects are assessed through assignments, group work and presentations. Practical assessments are also continuous through the year, based on practical skills needed to be a Sports Coach.
Entry Requirements

Foundation Diploma
5 GCSEs at grade 9-4 including both English and maths

Extended Certificate
4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English or maths

OR

Level 2 Sport gaining a merit portfolio grade plus GCSe grade 4 or above in English or maths or equivalent level 2 and GCSE grade 3 or level 1 in the other

Attendance Expectations As a full-time student you will be expected to attend all classes as specified on your timetable and all personal tutorial sessions.
Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

Further Study This qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to further study in higher education. It is recognised by higher-education providers as meeting entry requirements for many related degree programmes, such as a BA (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Development and a BA (Hons) in Sports Management. Learners should check entry requirements for degree programmes with providers.
Career Opportunities The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development focuses primarily on progression to employment as a coach. The extension, breadth and depth of optional units in this qualification give learners employment opportunities for working with participants of all ages, from children in primary and secondary schools, to adults of all ages. Possible job roles include community coach, sport-specific school coach, sport-specific after-school coach and weekend multi-sports holiday coach. Learners will also have the skills and expertise to work with beginners up to high-level performers. They will be able to work in the role of club sports coach, progressing to working with elite performers and in sport-development programmes in many capacities.
