Course Overview
T-Levels are vocational route that follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A
Levels. They’ve been co-created by a cross-section of engineering industry
experts, so you can gain the knowledge and skills you need to get ahead of the
pack and straight onto an engineering career.
This course is suitable for anyone interested in a career in engineering or
manufacturing with a particular focus on maintenance, installation and repair of
mechanical equipment.
Then you will be able to put everything you learn into practice, with a
substantial industry placement for a minimum of 315 hours across Year 1 and Year
2. This will give you an amazing opportunity to work within the engineering and
manufacturing sectors and gain invaluable experience as well as those key skills
that employers are looking for.
What you will Study
In the first year you will develop knowledge and understanding of a broad range of issues relevant to the sector through the study of Core Elements, including:
• Manufacturing Processes
• Engineering Design
• Engineering Maths
• Engineering Science
• Materials Science
• Electrical and Electronic principles
• Process Control Systems
• Business Management
• Health & Safety
• Project Management
You will also undertake an Employer Set Project that will consist of a well-defined, real industry-style brief that allows you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the core content and your core skills to solve mechanical problems.
In your second year you will focus on Mechanical Specialisms designed to support and develop your skills and behaviours in this area. The purpose of this specialism is for you to know and understand mechanical engineering systems commonly used in industry including:
Underpinning knowledge:
• Knowledge of mechanical principles and systems
• Knowledge and application of component classification, numbering and referencing systems
• Knowledge of how components are removed, replaced and repaired as part of mechanical engineering systems
• Skills to plan and prepare mechanical maintenance activities using evaluation
• Skills to select and use tools, equipment, machinery and technology safely and effectively to complete maintenance, installation and repair activities
You will have the opportunity to plan and undertake maintenance, fault finding, commissioning, testing and repair activities on mechanical systems, and complete associated documentation via a series of Project type sessions which will follow the route below:
1. Analysis of requirements
2. Planning & Preparing Activities
3. Performing Activities
4. Reviewing Activities
5. Communicating Information
How you will Learn
• Practical, hands-on activities
• Portfolio building
•
Classroom-based theory lessons
• Practical sessions in the laboratory and
workshops
• Directed assignment work
• Formative and mock
assessments
Course Structure
Classroom based: 50%
Practical work: 25%
Work placement:
25%
How you will be Assessed
The core elements will be assessed by two, externally set, end of year
examinations.
The Employer Set Project will be externally assessed across
four practical tests.
The Mechanical Specialism will be externally assessed
across a number of practical tests during Year 2.
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at grade 9-5 including English and maths.
Attendance Expectations
Five days per week over 36 weeks over two years.
At least 45 days of this will be spent on your industry
placement.
Further Study
The completion of a T-Level gives you the opportunity to progress onto higher education courses and training.
Career Opportunities
T-Levels focus on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the Engineering industry, which will prepare you to enter the industry through employment or as an Apprentice.
