Course Overview

Choosing to study for a Level 2 Extended Certificate in Applied Science is a great decision to make. More and more employers are looking for well-qualified people to work within the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths. The applied sciences offer a route to a wide variety of careers, including forensic scientist, drug researcher, medical physics technician, science technician, and many more. Whatever your ambitions, this qualification will help to sharpen your skills for employment or further study.

You will learn through practical work in the laboratory, educational visits, and classroom activities.

What you will Study

You will study these eight mandatory units:

  • Principles of Science (externally assessed)
  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Energy and our Universe
  • Biology and our Environment
  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Health Applications of Life Science
  • Scientific Skills (externally assessed)

You will also take a selection of optional units, those include:

  • The Living Body
  • Biotechnology Procedures and Applications
  • Science in Medicine
  • Exploring our Universe

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (or new grade 9-3) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable.

These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4). Therefore the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

How you will be Assessed A wide variety of assessment methods will be used, including assessment of practical skills, presentations, laboratory reports, essay writing and model making as well as sitting the externally assessed exams which are 1 hour and 15 minutes in length.
Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 3, including Maths or equivalent qualification. You must have GCSE Grade 4 in English Language or Maths.

Further Study Success in this course will enable you to progress to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science as long as all entry requirements are met. Access to Higher Education courses may also be a progression to University to any students over 19 by the end of the course.
