Course Overview

The purpose of Higher National Certificate/Diploma (Production) is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the music industry and adapt to a constantly changing world.

The course is aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the music industry, the course gives students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.

Through practical classes, you will develop a wide range of techniques, and other teaching methods include formal lectures, seminars, tutorials and reflective practice.

What you will Study

You’ll study 15 units and cover a wide range of topics within music technology. An exploration of the theoretical concepts associated with music technology underpins the practical aspects of the course.

Year 1:
The HNC consists of 120 credits at Level 4 delivered via the ‘General’ Music pathway.

Specialist Units:

  • Applied Sound Principles
  • Creative Software Techniques
  • Songwriting
  • Composing Using Technology
  • Recording Technology

Year 2:
The HND consists of the HNC (above), plus an additional 120 credits at Level 5 delivered via the ‘Production’ pathway.

Mandatory Units:

  • Creative Research Project
  • Advanced Music Production

Specialist Units:

  • Composing to a Brief
  • Mixing and Mastering
  • Advanced Sound Design for Interactive Media
  • Advanced Composing Using Technology
  • Experimental Composition

Note that for HND learners, Level 4 units do not count towards the qualification grade.

How you will be Assessed

You will be assessed via centre-devised and Pearson-set assignments throughout the course.

Assessment methods are assignment based and may include practical projects including presentations, group activities, written reports, or research projects.

Entry Requirements

Minimum 64 UCAS tariff points from A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in a related subject.

Those with previous experience or learning that is relevant may be eligible via our Accredited Prior Learning (APL) process for accreditation towards this course.

All applicants must complete a satisfactory interview.

Attendance Expectations 3 days per week.

Further Study This course is recognised as a qualification in its own right or can be combined with a top-up degree such as our BA (Hons) Creative Industries (Top up) course to obtain a full honours degree.
