Course Overview

This Health and Social Care study programmes provide the knowledge needed when working in a health and social care environments, caring for young people, adults, and the elderly.

The programme covers a wide range of areas including; supporting individuals with their physical and emotional care, daily living needs and health care procedures. 

Level 1 learners will visit care settings with their tutor or have guest speakers within college, to gain an understanding of the skills and professional behaviours required when working in the care industry. The average salary you could expect to earn working in the Health and Social Care sector is from the minimum wage for a care assistant up to £30,000 for a setting manager.

Level 2 learners will have placement experience in either care homes, charity organisations or day care settings, when tutors consider that learners are placement ready and can work professionally.

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at  grade 9-4 in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable.

How you will Learn

You will be involved in a variety of activities including workbooks, poster work, lectures, visiting speakers, tutor presentations, groupwork and research and practical activities.

How you will be Assessed

At levels 1 and 2 you will be assessed by a range of methods including oral questioning, portfolio building, posters, written assignments and practical tasks.

Level 2
4 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 3, one will be either English or Maths

Attendance Expectations

Level 1 and Level 2 can be offered at Wakefield College, Castleford College and Selby College.

Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course

Further Study

On completion with the appropriate pass and English and maths grades you can progress through the levels. For example learners completing level 1, who follow college rules, attend above 95% and are progressing in maths and English will be offered a place on level 2.

Wakefield College offers a FdSc Health and Wellbeing and BSc (Hons) Health and Wellbeing (Top-up).

Career Opportunities This study programme may support progression into a wide range of job roles in the health and social care sector, including: Care Support Workers in residential settings, Healthcare Assistants in Community, Primary Care and Acute Health Environments, Care Support Workers in Domiciliary Services, Care within Supported Living or Day Services Community-Based Support Workers, Nursing Associate roles and apprenticeship roles in dental nursing, pharmacy and social work.
