What you will Study

This study programme will cover a range of the topics and units at each level, some of which are listed below:

You will study Health & Safety as a mandatory unit plus:

 Entry 3 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies
Covering Motorcycle and Car technology including:
• Engine operating Principles
• Chassis systems
• Vehicle electrical systems
with Paint/Body disciplines included as additionality

Level 1 Award or Diploma in Light Vehicle Service & Repair
• Steering and suspension
• Vehicle braking systems
• Vehicle wheels and tyres
• Battery and lighting system

Level 2 Award or Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies
• Petrol and Diesel engine operation
• Petrol and Diesel engine repair

Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle
• Engine units and components
• Auxiliary electrical units and components
• Chassis units and components
• Inspection of vehicles

Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (Subject to availability)
• Chassis systems
• Auxiliary/electrical systems and transmission
• Vehicle inspection

How you will Learn

This course is 50% classroom study and 50% practical work. You’ll learn by attending practical and theoretical sessions in our classrooms and state-of-the-art motor vehicle workshops.

How you will be Assessed

You’ll be assessed through practical tasks conducted in our mechanical workshops and evolve online knowledge examinations and portfolio building.

GCSEs Grade 2 - 1 or below in English and Maths

Level 1
3 GCSEs Grade 9 - 1

Level 2 Certificate
5 GCSEs Grade 9 - 3 including English and Maths
OR
Level 1 in an automotive qualification plus English and Maths Grade 9 - 3

Level 2 Diploma
5 GCSEs Grade 9 - 3 including English and Maths
OR
Level 2 Certificate in an automotive qualification and working towards English and Maths GCSE Grade 4 or above

Level 3 Diploma
4 GCSEs Grade 9 - 4 including English and Maths
OR
Level 2 Diploma plus English and Maths at Grade 4

Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course

On successful completion and with the required English and maths grades you can progress through the levels.

Career Opportunities

Many opportunities exist for technicians within the industry. You could join a small local firm, a major national chain or end up owning your own business. You could work on buses or farm vehicles, work on new models for a manufacturer, go into the armed forces or even join a motor racing team as a mechanic/race technician. Some students progress to become MOT testers and vehicle diagnostic technicians.
