Course Overview

If you’re serious about a career working with animals, this is the study programme for you.

You’ll be learning by handling the animals in the College’s collection of small mammals and exotic species, undertaking work experience placements and going on visits such as to The Deep, Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Swithens Farm.

What you will Study

BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Land-based Studies - Animal Care
• Practical experience of handling, feeding and caring for a range of animals.
•  Skills needed to work in the animal care industry including: being organised, researching, teamwork, independence and being intuitive when working with animals, estate skills and wildlife surveying.
• You will also investigate working in the Land-Based Sector and develop a Personal Progression Plan to help with your next steps in the industry.

How you will Learn

You will gain a wide variety of  skills and techniques by working in a realistic animal care environment that includes a range of small mammals and exotic animals.

You will work on your own as well as in a group, developing your independent study skills. Class based lessons will give you a full understanding of the theory of working with animals and expand your knowledge for assessments. During the course of the academic year, you will be involved in relevant visits, locally and nationally. For Level 1 there will also be an opportunity to gain hands on experience either as an individual, independent work placement or supported group placement.

Level 2 and Level 3 – a one day per week work placement is an integral part of the course as well as other opportunities to work with employers either on site or as guest speakers.

How you will be Assessed

Level 1 All units will have observed and written assessments. These could be in the form of posters, leaflets, completing assignment tasks or answering questions.

Level 2 There are exam elements for Animal Biology and Animal Welfare. Remaining units have graded assignments to complete.

Level 3 there are exam elements for Animal Biology, Animal Welfare & Ethics and Animal Breeding & Genetics. Remaining units have graded assignments to complete.

Entry Requirements

Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Land-based Studies - Animal Care
Progression from an Entry Level in a relevant subject with English and Maths at Entry Level 3

Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care
5 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 3, including English or maths or equivalent
OR
Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies - Animal Care, plus Level 1 English and Maths

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management
4 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 4, including English or Maths and a 3 in the other
OR
4 GCSEs Grade 9 - 4 and Level 2 in either English or Maths, and Grade 3 or Level 1 in the other
OR
Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care at Merit Grade plus, Level 2 English and Maths

Attendance Expectations All full-time students are expected to attend all timetabled sessions including tutorial and Maths and English classes and engage in work experience opportunities.

This is part of a full-time study programme therefore you will need to attend all sessions.
 
The course may be available as a standalone fee-paying course that is not part of a full-time study programme subject to sufficient interest.

Fee Information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course

Further Study

On successful completion and with the required English and maths grades you can progress through the levels.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management students can progress to the HND in Animal Management (Animal Behaviour and Welfare) which we offer at Wakefield College or an Animal Management Foundation Degree or BSc (Hons) in Animal Management. Related degrees courses include Zoology, Marine Biology, Animal Welfare and Behaviour are also alternative progression routes.

Career Opportunities

This study programme will provide opportunities for employment in any of the following sectors:

Pet store assistant, cattery, kennel assistant, animal nursing assistant, animal groomer and pet shop assistant are just some possibilities. You could work in boarding kennels and catteries, veterinary practices, charities such as the RSPCA, Guide Dogs for the Blind or wildlife sanctuaries, grooming parlours, pet shops, zoos and wildlife parks.

Supervisory or management positions in a wide range of environments including boarding kennels, zoos, wildlife rescue centres, the veterinary industry, conservation projects and environment management.
