Course Overview

The course is mainly assignment-based and has been designed in consultation with employers to ensure that you will develop necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in industry. There is also an opportunity throughout this course for students to participate in work placements with local employers within the computing industry to gain valuable experience before they enter to industry themselves on a full-time basis.  

Computer Science plays a vital role in the technological developments that have become part of everyday life. In this honours degree we will provide you with  programming and problem-solving skills required in the Computing sector whilst covering a range of cutting-edge topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Big Data.

This is a taught course where you'll participate in a range of learning activities including lectures, classroom presentations, research tasks, group work, practical workshops, tutorials, and self-directed activities. Through these sessions, you'll develop the knowledge and skills to support your assignment work. You will normally have about 10 hours of taught classes per week and will be expected to complete another 10 hours per week self-directed study.

  • How you will be Assessed Our assessment approach is tailored around the academic and employability skills needed to pursue a career in this fast-paced, demanding sector.  As such, many of the assessments relate to the application of knowledge, with the generation of a solution to an industry related problem.
     
    Assessment will be in a variety of formats including presentations, written reports, development of coded solutions and practical activities.
    Entry Requirements

    Merit average at HND or 55% in a relevant Foundation Degree

    Grade 9-4 in GCSE English and Maths

    Applications from mature students with relevant professional/life experience are welcome.

    You may be required to provide further evidence to decide on your suitability for the course and an admissions test may be used in certain circumstances.

    Applications will be considered on an individual basis and applicants with extenuating circumstances may be accepted with a lower tariff at the discretion of the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group.

    Further Study The course will enable students to undertake a postgraduate qualification. Wakefield College offers a range of postgraduate qualifications in Education and there are a range of MA programmes at a number of regional and national HE institutions available. Students will explore such progression opportunities via modules studied on the programme and via personal tutorials.
