Course Overview

Toolmakers and Tool & Die Maintenance Technicians are predominantly involved in the highly skilled, complex and specialist detailed work of manufacturing and maintaining the engineering tooling used to produce components, products and assemblies. These products, assemblies and systems affect all of our daily lives, whether it be for travel such as (cars, planes, boats and rail) energy, defence, food, clothing, packaging and health including medical equipment, devices and implants such as joint replacements. This requires the application of a broad range of activities including the interpretation of Engineering drawings and technical instructions and the use of hand, machine and automated computer controlled machine tools and measuring equipment.

The course is delivered by a mixture of theory and practical work, both at College and in the workplace.

What you will Study

On this programme you will study towards the product design pathway:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Toolmaker, Tool and Die Maintenance
  • Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)

The apprentice will have a depth and breadth of English and mathematics that allow them to operate successfully within their role. This may be met through entry criteria determined by the employer or qualifications and training within the apprenticeship. However, on completion all apprentices will have minimum level 2 qualifications in English and Maths.

How you will be Assessed There will be continuous assessment of both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
Entry Requirements

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices.

Most candidates will have achieved GCSE Grade 9-4 or above in English and Maths and a STEM - related subject at Level 2 prior to commencement of apprenticeship.

If you do not have these, we can assess your current level of English/Maths.

Attendance Expectations A mixture of day release & employer based.

Further Study This standard aligns to the core engineering skills required for similar occupations in other industries. It meets the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) by an appropriate Professional Engineering Institution.
