Course Overview

If you’ve got a passion for music technology and want to broaden your skills, develop current musicianship skills and career opportunities through practical learning, then the Rockschool music study programme is right for you.

You will develop your music technology and production skills through a wide range of course modules. You will gain knowledge of how the current music industry works and learn how to develop compositional and sequencing skills both in groups and independently.

Additionally, you will develop music production techniques that focuses on popular music, TV, film and radio using a range of software including ProTools, Traktor, Cubase 10 and Logic Pro X. You will have the opportunity to learn about how music is used as a tool to promote positive wellbeing and health. You will have the opportunity to develop your industry specific and wider skills, working towards a career within the music industry or Higher Education on one of the fantastic HE music study courses at Wakefield College.

Rockschool (RSL) is the leading accredited provider of rock exams worldwide. Their Vocational Qualifications are taught the world over and are renowned for their practicality, flexibility and creativity. Inspired by the legends of rock, their qualifications are created with you, the musician in mind.

Level 3 Music Technology applicants should display an active interest in the subject. The ability to play an instrument is desired but not essential.

Please Note: Work placement opportunities will be available.

You will learn through classroom based and practical work. You will have the opportunity to work in our specially designed recording studios, classrooms and theatres, using the latest industry standard software and equipment. Students will also have the opportunity to collaborate with performance students in a variety of internal and external projects.

What you will Study

Examples of some of the units you may study are:

  • How to operate studio equipment, record and mix a recording
  • How to sequence and produce your own music and remix existing compositions
  • How to compose in different musical styles and develop song writing techniques using chords and melodies
  • Develop practical harmony skills using music theory and compositional processes
  • Design, create and edit sound for TV, Film, Radio and other media outlets
  • Develop essential skills such as academic writing, communication, critical thinking, flexibility and independent learning
  • DJ skills such as beat matching and mixing
  • The fundamentals of engineering for live events using digital desks and current industry standard equipment
How you will be Assessed You’ll be assessed through practical and theoretical based project work in music technology and creative industries in context to the level of this course.
Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 4, including English or Maths
OR
4 GCSEs at Grade 9 - 4 and Level 2 in either English or Maths
OR
Successful completion of Level 2 or equivalent at Merit Grade, plus GCSE English or Maths at Grade 4 or Level 2 English or Maths

PLUS
Satisfactory interview/audition or submission of music production/compositions

Further Study

On completion with the appropriate pass and English and maths grades you can progress through the levels.

After level 3 you could progress to one of the Higher education courses offered at Wakefield College, such as:
