Course Overview

A motor vehicle service and maintenance technician services and repairs light vehicles such as cars and vans and works either in dealerships which focus on a particular manufacturer, or in an independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles.

The course will be delivered by a mixture of classroom work and workplace training.  An essential part of the course is individual study and workplace mentoring.

Assessment will take place at periodic periods throughout the course of study before individuals enter the end point assessment that is carried out by an external body.

What You Will Study

You will study engine diagnostic and rectification, vehicle chassis systems diagnosis and rectification, vehicle auxiliary systems diagnosis and rectification, and vehicle inspection procedures.

Maths and English (and sometimes IT) are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at Grade 9-4 in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.

Skills in Maths and English will support your apprenticeship programme, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at Grade 9-4. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

How You Will Be Assessed

By continuous assessment in college and in the workplace and by written and oral testing in College.

Entry Requirements

Only apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 16-18 will continue to be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. However, for apprentices aged 19+, the apprentice or their employer can still choose for the apprentice to study towards an English and maths qualification. We will continue to fund those apprentices that wish to study towards an English and maths qualification. There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications

If you do not have the relevant level of qualification, we can assess your current level of literacy and/or numeracy.

Attendance Expectations

You will attend college for one day per week.
