Course Overview

An Autocare Technician carries out a range of services and repairs to cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles, working in an Autocare or “Fast-Fit” Centre, which may be part of a national chain or operated by a regional/local independent group/owner. An Autocare Technician requires a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills. They will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair simple system faults.

This course is 50% classroom study and 50% practical work. You’ll learn by attending practical and theoretical sessions in our classrooms and state-of-the-art motor vehicle workshops.

What You Will Study
  • Tyre legislation and technical information including EU Tyre labelling, Tyre Pressure Monitoring systems, sidewall markings, homologated fitments relating to cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles.
  • Fundamentals of specific vehicle systems including steering & suspension, braking systems, battery & charging systems, exhaust systems and Air-Conditioning systems.
  • Vehicle 4-wheel geometry principles.
  • Basic consumer legislation relevant to the occupation.
  • Appropriate Health & Safety legislation and requirements for the workplace.
  • Hybrid/Electric Vehicle system and safe working procedures.
  • Data protection requirements to protect customer and payment information.
  • General sales principles including, identifying customer & vehicle needs, presenting solutions, closing the sale and dealing with buying resistance.
  • How the business works and how you contribute to the overall results, demonstrating commercial awareness.
  • How to carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance using manufacturers specifications or approved schedules, using vehicle specific data and meeting legal requirements.
  • The importance of following work place procedures and the consequences of not doing so. Level 3 qualification for F-Gas handler for air-conditioning in motor vehicles in accordance with (EU) 517/2014 regulations (or an equivalent qualification that a European Union (EU) member state recognises) Level 2 qualification for safe isolation of electric and hybrid vehicles
How You Will Be Assessed

Assessments will be carried out throughout the course.

You’ll be assessed through practical tasks conducted in our mechanical workshops and externally set and externally marked, online theory assessments during and end point assessment process.

Entry Requirements

Individual employers will set their own selection criteria for applicants. It is however recommended that candidates can demonstrate an interest in the occupation as well as an ability to work in an organised and methodical way to identify and solve problems; also demonstrate an ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Only apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 16-18 will continue to be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. However, for apprentices aged 19+, the apprentice or their employer can still choose for the apprentice to study towards an English and maths qualification. We will continue to fund those apprentices that wish to study towards an English and maths qualification . There may still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 to upskill.

Further Study

Candidates are eligible to progress onto a Level 3 Light or Heavy Vehicle Technician Standard.
