Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technicians covers a wide range of roles, such as Electrical Technicians, Mechanical Technicians, Control & Instrumentation Technicians, Electrical System and Process Control Technicians.

Core Skills:

A Technician will apply their knowledge of plant and systems to safely perform maintenance and operational activities with minimum supervision. This will require them to:

• Comply with industry health, safety and environmental working practices and regulations
• Locate, and rectify faults on plant and equipment
• Communicate with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities
• Read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation
• Prepare work areas to undertake work related activities and reinstate those areas after the completion of the work related activities
• Inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements
  Assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment
• Communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification

In addition a Mechanical Technician will:

• Position, assemble, install and dismantle mechanical plant and equipment which may include pumps, valves, gearboxes, pipework, to agreed specifications
• Carry out planned, unplanned and preventative maintenance procedures on mechanical plant and equipment
• Replace, repair or remove components in mechanical plant and equipment and ensure its return to operational condition
• Diagnose and determine the cause of faults in mechanical plant and equipment

On this programme you will study towards one of the available pathways. Depending on your job role, you will study a variety of units in Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations (or equivalent), BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and NVQ Level 3 Diploma.

The apprentice will have a depth and breadth of English and mathematics that allow them to operate successfully within their role. This may be met through entry criteria determined by the employer or qualifications and training within the apprenticeship. However, there will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 if they do not have exemptions due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications.

There will be continuous assessment of both your practical skills and theoretical knowledge.

Candidates must have an employer willing to support the requirements of the apprenticeship standard.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprentices.

Most candidates will have achieved GCSEs at Grade 9-4 in English and Maths and a STEM-related subject at Level 2 prior to commencement of apprenticeship.

If you do not have these, we can assess your current level of English/Maths. Only apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 16-18 will continue to be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. Apprentices who began their apprenticeship training when aged 19+ will no longer be subject to the mandatory requirement to study towards and achieve English and maths. However, for apprentices aged 19+, the apprentice or their employer can still choose for the apprentice to study towards an English and maths qualification. We will continue to fund those apprentices that wish to study towards an English and maths qualification . There will still be a requirement for 19+ students to attempt Maths and English at L2 due the entry requirements for the BTEC qualifications
